I couldn't find a better location for discussions on 61850. So i'm posting my query here.

Many of today's substation devices like protection relays, say that they are IEC61850 compatible. From a SCADA point-of-view what support is required to interface with such devices? As I understand, 61850 is mapped to the MMS protocol, which is not ideally suited for SCADA. Also, a mapping to 870-5-101/4 is underway. Then in the current scenario what should a SCADA vendor support in order to interface with 61850-compatible devices?
